February 19, 2021 hike: Esperero Canyon.
This is the third time I've done Esperero this year, but this time I did a substantial part of the high trail that connects it to Ventana Canyon. I've never done the high trail, so this was new territory. I almost made it to Window Peak, but snow and cold shadows blocked the peak access - another day.
It was the best day yet for hiking. Not a cloud all day, temps in the high 60s and almost no wind, even at the top.
The views from the top were spectacular with views Esperero Canyon, East Tucson to the south and east and the backside of the Catalina and Oro Valley to the west.
Photo 1 shows the lower canyon, which is obviously prime saguaro territory.
Photos 2 and 3 show the mid-canyon, an area called Geronimo Meadows, which is a beautiful forested area that is fairly flat.
Photo 4 shows the upper part of Esperero Canyon to the southeast from the top. You can see the snow-capped Rincons in background and other high mountain chains further to the southeast.
Photos 5 and 6 show the peak to the east at the top of Esperero Canyon (Mount Esperero?) a very dramatic peak. You can see some fire burn in photo 5. The fire damage is often most noticeable on ridges separating canyons.
Photo 7 shows the backside of the Catalinas looking west. You can see Oro Valley in the background and the Tortolitas further back and the mountains at Picacho Peak even further back.
Photo 8 shows more of Esperero Canyon, featuring the twin spires on the east side of the canyon. Again you can see the snow-capped Rincons and other mountain ranges to the southeast.
Overall, if was a fantastic day. The weather couldn't have been nicer and the hiking was spectacular.
Hiking stats: 15.7 miles with 4,030 vertical feet to a peak of 6,750 feet. Long and a lot of vertical. I was tired last night!
